Io ho Ubuntu 9.04 e, usando Synaptic, trovo il pacchetto build-essential 11.4
E' presente in it.archive.ubuntu.com/main
Controlla se lo hai abilitato. Lo puoi fare in modo grafico: "Sistema" -> "Amministrazione" -> "Sorgenti Software" -> "Software per Ubuntu" e verifica che sia selezionata la casella "Software open source supportato da Canonical (Main).

Se vuoi, da linea di comando puoi fare:

Anabasi avevi perfettamente ragione…ho la 8.04!Praticamente poco tempo fa il sistema si è bloccato e ho dovuto rinstallare tutto da capo…e per sbaglio ho preso il cd della versione precedente.Il problema è che la 8.04 mi ha dato seri problemi di navigazione,non c’era modo di farlo connettere…e sicuramente non ci riuscirò nemmeno adesso…risorsi il problema passando alla 9.04…se mi dici dove posso reperire la versione 9.10 desktop di ubuntu me la scarico e la installo.

Ad ogni modo, non si spiega perché tu non riesca a scaricare dai repo il pacchetto build-essential. Ho controllato, ed è presente anche nei repo di Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy).
E, a vedere il tuo sources.list, sembra che non ci dovrebbero essere problemi.

No,non ci riuscii...infatti decisi di passare alla versione successiva.Comunque da quando l'ho rimesso non ci ho nemmeno provato,cioè non ho configurato nessuna connessione...se vuoi faccio la prova

Ciao,finalmente sono riuscito a vedere quel famoso ciao che il mio programma chiedeva,l’ho fatto con il compilatore g++ di ubuntu!Vorrei chiedervi ancora una cosa…l’eseguibile di un programma funziona su tutte le macchine che hanno lo stesso sistema operativo?Cioè se io faccio un eseguibile di un programma con un compilatore installato in ubuntu,funzionerà su qualunque computer che ha ubuntu?Se invece lo avessi fatto con un compilatore installato su windows xp,avrebbe funzionato su tutte le macchine che hanno xp?

Attenzione, l'eseguibile è compilato per un certo tipo di macchina e un certo tipo di sistema operativo.

Il tuo programma ha buone probabilità di essere portato su qualsiasi distro linux/unix; non girerà mai su windows.

Se però fai uso di librerie particolari ovviamente queste dovranno essere presenti nel sistema in cui porti il programma.
